My son has benefited tremendously from the reading program at Miller Lake Learning Center. The program took him just over a year to complete and it has been the single most positive learning tool that has attributed to his confidence and ability as a student.
When he began the program he was a grade 7 student whom worked very hard “keep up” with the curriculum. His abilities were restricted as he was functioning well below grade level. My son has always struggled in school, we worked very hard together since grade 3. It was endless, it seemed like we spent hours every night practicing reading, spelling, doing assignments, only to achieve “C’s” and maybe a “B” here and there. As a Mom I felt so helpless, I was always wanted to help him, boost his confidence and somehow try to get him to understand. It was heartbreaking to have him ask me “why am I so stupid?”, “why can’t I be like everyone else?”
Finally, one day, he asked about attending a tutor for help. I sought out the services at Miller Lake Learning Center and had him assessed. It was a big eye opener for me; I was shocked to learn that my son was not doing as well as I thought. It was at this point I realized I couldn’t help him anymore; he needed something beyond the support I could give him.
He began the reading program in November 2009, a very difficult undertaking as he/we were dealing with his father’s death a month prior from brain cancer. Toby and Megan were great with my son. The exercised a great deal of patience to a grieving teenager whom was struggling to learn. Many evenings he didn’t want to be there but they gained his trust and attention and encouraged him to keep working. I am truly grateful for their huge effort in helping my son achieve.
By the end of grade 7 his marks had greatly improved. They went from the struggling B & C’s to solid B’s and A’s as well. His grade 8 year to date has been phenomenal. I no longer help him with any of his homework, he brings me the finished product, and his work is great! He has confidence in all of the projects and no longer considers it a horrible chore to get it done. He is taking pride in his work and I am very very proud of his achievement. I have always believed the best gift in life is knowledge and I am so happy that I was able to give this to him by pursuing the Reading Program at Miller Lake Leaning Center. My son now has a much better foundation to build his last few years of school on. I believe he will be confident in years to come because of what he learned there.
A very, very special heartfelt thanks to the wonderful staff for all your help and support throughout the last year and a half.
Sincerely, Tanya Jewell
Just thought I would drop you a line and tell you that my son is doing amazing at reading in Primary. His beginning at reading with your program has really made a difference.

You have worked absolute miracles with our daughter and we thank you from the bottom of our hearts for what you've taught her. She is a more confident reader, and more courageous with her spelling. We would not have been able to accomplish this without you. Thank you for everything you have done for us.

My daughter was identified with having a reading problem in her first years of school but we were told that it may take 3 years before she would be tested through the school system. Determined to not have a disability limit her ability to enjoy school and reading I immediately enrolled her in a reading program to address the problem early. Despite using two different reading programs and personal tutoring from grade 1 to grade 4 we felt that there was little change in her reading ability and she was in fact falling further behind.
Miller Lake Learning Center and their style of teaching was my last hope for finding a solution that was right for my daughters reading problems. I could not have imagined in August of last year that by June my daughter would not only be finishing the program but be reading the second book in the Twilight series by herself. The program, staff and environment gave my daughter the support and encouragement she needed to open a whole new world of books to an eager learner with reading difficulties.
She is now a confident reader who understands her reading disability and has the strategies she needs to be successful.
